Question
I don’t know what’s wrong, but my child has been crying and whining all the time lately. We’ve gone to the hospital and had checks done, but nothing seems to help. Can children eat the same foods as adults?
Answer
Some older people have the habit of chewing their food first before feeding it to babies. They say this is to avoid burning the baby with hot food and also to help grind the food for easier digestion. Many older people still hold this belief. In fact, this is not correct. Babies who vomit or spit up may be due to a horizontal position of the stomach and incomplete development of the esophageal sphincter. There’s no need to worry too much; as they grow older, it will get better. In the meantime, babies can sleep in a position with their heads elevated 30 degrees to alleviate symptoms.
