Question

A newborn baby of forty days has recently experienced severe diarrhea and is constantly crying and restless. Even after taking the baby to the hospital for examination, there has been no improvement. Is there a solution?

Answer

When the baby is only breastfed, diarrhea may be due to breastmilk diarrhea, which is a normal phenomenon caused by the baby’s underdeveloped gastrointestinal system. As the baby’s gastrointestinal system matures and complementary foods are introduced, the stool will gradually become more formed. However, if the baby is accompanied by symptoms such as fever, this may be caused by infection. It is recommended that parents immediately administer symptomatic anti-inflammatory medication and oral antibiotics (such as amoxicillin), along with vitamin C and naproxen, for treatment.
