Question
What Are the Symptoms of Neonatal Jaundice?
Answer
The symptoms of neonatal jaundice may initially appear on the face and neck, then spread to the trunk and limbs. The skin may appear slightly yellow, and the whites of the eyes may also turn slightly yellow, but the palms of the hands and soles of the feet will not turn yellow. These symptoms usually resolve within 2 to 3 days after birth, and the skin color returns to normal within 5 to 6 days. In more severe cases, the entire body may turn yellow, and even vomit and cerebrospinal fluid may turn yellow, lasting for more than a week. For premature infants, jaundice may sometimes persist until the fourth week after birth. If the stool is extremely pale or grayish white, and the urine is darker, it may be a sign of neonatal hepatitis or bile duct obstruction.
