Question

How much water should a 40-day-old baby drink daily?

Answer

Babies require a significant amount of water each day, with the amount of water given with each feeding being about half the volume of the milk feed. It should be administered between two meals: 30 milliliters in the first week of life; 45 milliliters in the second week; 50 to 60 milliliters one month later; 60 to 75 milliliters at three months; 70 to 80 milliliters at four months; 80 to 100 milliliters at six months; and 100 to 120 milliliters from eight to twelve months. More water should be given during summer. In cases of cold, fever, vomiting, or diarrhea, dehydration, more frequent drinking is necessary.
