Question

A child’s eyes are always watery, and they tend to cry a lot shortly after birth. How should one handle the issue of a child’s severe congenital amblyopia?

Answer

  1. Correct refractive errors;
  2. For central fixation, methods such as occlusion therapy, vision stimulation therapy, and suppression therapy can be used to improve vision;
  3. For eccentric fixation, try methods like posterior image therapy, red filter or red flash therapy, and Haidinger brush to restore foveal center fixation;
  4. Binocular vision training can also help improve vision. In terms of medication, 1% atropine ointment or eye drops can be used in suppression therapy to blur the vision of the normal eye, forcing the patient to use the amblyopic eye and thereby improving the vision of the amblyopic eye.
