Question
My baby has had a canker sore in their mouth for a month now, and for some reason, the child has been acting up and crying non-stop recently. We’ve taken them to the hospital for checks, but it hasn’t helped. What can we do to solve this problem?
Answer
The canker sore in your baby’s mouth, also known as snow mouth disease, is an oral inflammation caused by Candida albicans infection. This condition is more common in newborns, those with malnutrition, diarrhea, or those on long-term use of broad-spectrum antibiotics or corticosteroids. Since the weak alkaline environment is unfavorable for the growth of fungi, you can use 2% to 5% baking soda solution to rinse the mouth. Other methods, such as applying 1% glycerin or traditional Chinese Bingpeng powder to the mouth, can also be effective. The most effective method is to apply a liquid containing 50,000 to 100,000 units of nystatin per milliliter to the affected area three times a day. Avoid eating milk or drinking water while applying the medication; it’s best to apply it after feeding to prevent washing away the medication in the mouth. Always consult a doctor before using any medication.
