Newborn jaundice, or physiological jaundice, usually appears within 24 hours after birth and typically resolves itself within 1 to 2 weeks. For full-term infants, the serum bilirubin level should not exceed 204μmol/L (12mg/dl), while for premature infants, it should not exceed 255μmol/L (15mg/dl). However, even if the bilirubin level does not reach the warning threshold, certain premature infants may still develop severe bilirubin encephalopathy. Therefore, parents should closely monitor their child’s health status and seek medical assistance promptly if any abnormalities are detected, to prevent misdiagnosis or missed diagnosis of pathological jaundice.
