Question

Can diabetics get married and have children?

Answer

A diabetic was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 18, and their father also has a history of diabetes. During pregnancy, the impact of diabetes on both the mother and the fetus can become more complex. Due to the placenta’s effect, the patient’s sensitivity to insulin decreases, which may require an increase in insulin usage. Additionally, diabetics during pregnancy may experience complications such as urinary tract infections, polyhydramnios, eclampsia, and even may induce diabetic ketoacidosis. For the fetus, the risks of malformations, miscarriage, macrosomia, and neonatal hypoglycemia also increase. Therefore, the severity of the diabetic’s condition should be considered, and if it is severe, it is advised not to become pregnant.
