Question
My husband has diabetes and is on insulin. We want to have a child. The doctor said that it’s okay to have children while on insulin therapy, and my husband is using insulin aspart, which is a human insulin analog. I would like to know if the doctor thinks it’s better to use a human insulin analog for childbirth or regular human insulin.
Answer
Hello! Insulin can be categorized by its source into animal insulin and human insulin. The latter causes fewer immune reactions and is therefore more commonly used. To meet clinical needs, human insulin analogs have been developed, which are categorized into rapid-acting, intermediate-acting, and long-acting, differing only in the duration of maintaining blood glucose levels. Insulin aspart is a rapid-acting insulin, primarily used to control postprandial blood glucose levels, with very few side effects. So, you can consider having a child.
