Question

How to treat neonatal gastroenteritis?

Answer

When a newborn is infected with gastroenteritis, appropriate antibiotics should be chosen based on the pathogen and the results of drug sensitivity tests. For Gram-negative bacillary infections, third-generation cephalosporins or amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium can be used. Viral gastroenteritis does not require the use of antibiotics. For fungal enteritis, antibiotics should be discontinued immediately and antifungal medications should be used instead. Additionally, since diarrhea may lead to skin issues like diaper rash, parents should pay attention to their child’s symptoms and seek medical attention promptly, avoiding self-medication to prevent delaying treatment.
