Question

Is it sleep epilepsy if a child suddenly sits up after sleeping, sometimes even gets up to walk around, and occasionally has seizures or bedwetting?

Answer

It’s common for children to suddenly cry out, roll over, or talk in their sleep during sleep. Generally, there’s no need to be anxious. In severe cases, some children may even wet the bed or suddenly sit up and walk around, or behave erratically. If the episodes are frequent, it’s advisable to consult a specialist doctor for a differential diagnosis to determine whether it’s epilepsy or a sleep disorder, and whether it’s a pathological or physiological phenomenon. EEG (Electroencephalogram) is very meaningful for diagnosis. In necessary cases, it’s also recommended to perform EEG monitoring during nighttime sleep to accurately diagnose the type of epilepsy and choose an appropriate treatment plan.
