Question

My child, who is 3 years old, has had adenoid hypertrophy for half a year. He snores heavily during colds and sometimes wakes up due to congestion. The examination yesterday showed that the adenoids are larger than 0.6. Do I need to have surgery? Is it too young at 3 years old?

Answer

Adenoid hypertrophy usually occurs when a child’s cold and cough do not heal completely, leading to long-term nasal obstruction which can cause facial deformation, affect intelligence, and lead to otitis media. Surgery should be considered in a timely manner. For adenoid hypertrophy, ionotherapy can also be adopted. If a child develops this condition after the age of four or five and the condition is not severe, it can be managed and may naturally regress after the age of ten or so.
