Question
What are the symptoms of epileptic seizures in children?
Answer
Pediatric epilepsy focal motor seizures, also known as simple partial motor seizures, manifest as brief, rhythmic twitching or numbness and tingling on the opposite side of the mouth corner, eyelids, fingers, toes, or one side of the face and limbs. The twitching can sometimes spread from the fingers to the upper limbs and to the opposite side. During the seizure, consciousness is not lost. 4. Myoclonic Seizures Children may experience sudden, forceful, and rapid muscle contractions in a particular muscle or group of muscles. Some may present as regional and can cause one or both limbs to twitch. During the seizure, objects held in the hand may fall or be flung out. When trunk muscles are involved, it may result in sudden frequent nodding, bending forward, or backward, leading to a fall when standing. 5. Childhood Absence Epilepsy Absence seizures typically occur between the ages of 5 to 7 years and are characterized by sudden onset and cessation of brief periods of consciousness without associated motor or autonomic symptoms.
