Question
What should parents do if a child has an epileptic seizure? How should it be handled?
Answer
- Stay by the patient’s side at all times, waiting for the seizure to stop.
- Quickly support the child to prevent them from falling, then place them on a flat or safe surface.
- Loosen the child’s collar and sleeves to ensure clear airways, turning their head and body to one side to prevent saliva and mucus from entering the airway.
- Observe carefully which parts of the body are twitching during the seizure, whether there is consciousness and perception, and record the duration for description to the doctor.
- If the seizure persists for 10 minutes without relief, or if there are multiple seizures within 10 minutes, call for emergency assistance or take the child to the hospital immediately.
