Question

My child is 5 years old and recently I’ve noticed they always tilt their head and squint when they look at things. Could it be strabismus?

Answer

Symptoms of pediatric strabismus include:

  1. Due to long-term strabismus, a child may not use one eye, leading to visual weakening in that eye. This visual weakening caused by lack of use is known as amblyopia. The ability to perceive depth and stereoscopic vision requires the use of both eyes in parallel, so children with long-term strabismus may lack depth and stereoscopic perception. To use both eyes, some children may tilt their heads or faces.
  2. Poor stereoscopic perception, unable to accurately judge the position and distance of spatial objects. Esotropia may also present with neurological symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, insomnia, conjunctival and eyelid congestion, etc.
