Question
What are the functions of adenoids?
Answer
Adenoids, also known as pharyngeal tonsils, are a group of lymphoid tissue located at the posterior wall of the nasopharynx. During childhood, if infected, the adenoids may swell and become inflamed, sometimes leading to permanent hypertrophy. Adenoid hypertrophy may obstruct nasal breathing, affect the drainage function of the sinuses, and thereby increase the risk of developing sinusitis. Additionally, it may block the Eustachian tube, leading to middle ear infections. For children with adenoid hypertrophy or infection, surgery to remove the tonsils can usually be performed as part of the treatment.
