Question
What’s causing my newborn’s nose to be blocked?
Answer
Newborn nasal congestion may be due to a cold or an obstruction caused by a foreign object. If there is an object blocking the nostrils, you can use a cotton swab dipped in a small amount of water to gently remove the mucus from the nasal cavity. If you have a humidifier at home, adding essential oil to it can also help alleviate your baby’s nasal congestion. You can also use a warm, damp towel to apply pressure to the base of the nose to relieve the congestion. If your baby’s breathing is affected due to mucus blocking the nostrils, you can use a nasal aspirator to help your baby expel the mucus. In addition, massaging the nose and using a nasal decongestant patch are also methods to relieve nasal congestion.
