Question
Is it normal for a child to be unstable when standing?
Answer
If a child is eleven months old and still cannot support themselves while walking, it might be due to insufficient exercise, especially if the child has not crawled much. It could also be because of over-reliance caused by using a walker. Additionally, it’s important to rule out the possibility of delayed motor development. If the child has crawled little or used a walker, it’s advisable to let the child crawl more often to strengthen their balance. If the child has an abnormal birth history, such as asphyxia, umbilical cord around the neck, severely cloudy amniotic fluid, or preterm birth, there may be a possibility of poor brain development leading to delayed motor development. In such cases, it is necessary to conduct an intelligence test for the child to determine their developmental quotient. If there is indeed delayed motor development, early rehabilitation training and treatment should be initiated.
