Question

What should I do if my child keeps wetting the bed? They are five years old now.

Answer

Most children stop wetting the bed by the age of five. If a child continues to wet the bed at night, with occurrences of two or more times a month, it is medically referred to as “nocturnal enuresis.” It is advisable to first check for possible spinal bifida, and also be mindful not to overexert during the day. Otherwise, if the child sleeps too deeply at night and needs to urinate, they may not wake up and end up wetting the bed. It’s also important to avoid drinking too much fluid before bedtime. Reducing nighttime urine output and purchasing a timed alarm clock for regular bathroom breaks are recommended.
