Question
Patient Gender: One-and-a-half-year-old girl, with a small urethral opening, half of which is blocked by a membrane. The girl urinates like a boy, with the urine jetting forward and further. How should this be handled? Patient Age: One and a half years old
Answer
This condition may be congenital vaginal opening deformity. It is recommended to undergo an ultrasound examination at a hospital to confirm the normality of the uterus and the presence of the vagina. If a completely closed vagina is found, surgery is required to establish a normal vaginal opening. This surgery can meet the needs of sexual life in the future. Approximately one in every 4,000 to 5,000 female infants may be congenitally lacking a vagina and may also not have a uterus. Fortunately, surgery can recreate the vagina for these infants, and their future sexual life will be largely unaffected. In cases where there is no vagina at all, an ultrasound examination should be conducted first to confirm the presence of the uterus and its appendages before further treatment is administered.
