Question

After two days of intravenous fluid therapy, the child’s fever improved, but they have been continuously sneezing and taking medication has not seen any improvement. What could be the possible causes and solutions?

Answer

Under normal circumstances, adults produce several hundred milliliters of mucus daily. However, due to the richer vascular plexus in the nasal mucosa of children compared to adults, the secretions are also more abundant. Additionally, the nervous system’s regulatory function for nasal mucosal secretion and cilium movement is not yet fully developed, and children are not good at wiping their own noses, so it is normal for them to frequently have clear mucus. However, if a child has a long-term purulent yellow-green runny nose, they may have sinusitis; frequent white mucus may indicate a deficiency of vitamin A and vitamin B; an allergy to dust may cause a large amount of clear mucus to flow in a short period of time; some children with foreign objects in their nasal cavity may also frequently sneeze. Children with enlarged lymph nodes in the nasopharynx not only frequently sneeze but also have severe snoring, dull facial features, and narrow noses, which can severely affect their growth and posture. Immediate treatment should be sought.
