Question

Does a child with diarrhea need to take antibiotics?

Answer

Generally, if a child has runny bowel movements, it is more likely to be a viral infection. Without evidence of bacterial infection, antibiotics should not be used unnecessarily. You can first use some attapulgite powder to stop diarrhea and drink some oral rehydration salts to prevent dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. If the stool test shows white blood cells, you can take symptomatic anti-inflammatory medication; if there are no white blood cells, you do not need to take anti-inflammatory medication. Physiological diarrhea is usually caused by intestinal flora imbalance, and probiotics can be taken orally.
