Question

My child just gave birth and I don’t know what’s wrong, there are always red spots on their body, and they are also vomiting. Will the jaundice recur after blue light treatment?

Answer

Most newborns appear yellowish on the skin, white of the eyes, and mucous membranes in the mouth 2 to 3 days after birth, with varying degrees. Generally, the yellowing is more noticeable on the face and chest, but not on the palms and soles. When jaundice occurs, the child does not have any discomfort, the stool is not pale, and the urine is not too yellow. Physiological jaundice in newborns does not require treatment and usually subsides in about a week. Although physiological jaundice in newborns is a normal phenomenon, parents should also pay close attention to observation. If the child’s jaundice appears early and is severe, and does not subside quickly, it may be pathological jaundice. The causes of pathological jaundice are many and require timely medical examination.
