Question
What is the normal range for newborn jaundice?
Answer
Physiological jaundice generally does not require treatment. Starting to feed the newborn early can help expel meconium earlier and establish a normal intestinal flora, thereby reducing the absorption of bilirubin from the intestines, which can somewhat alleviate the jaundice. Newborns with jaundice should avoid using sulfonamides, aspirin, and medications containing sodium benzoate. Breast milk is usually fed on demand; let the baby feed when hungry. Formula-fed babies are typically fed every 3 hours, while breastfed babies can be fed anytime the baby is hungry.
