Question
A newborn has tinea incarnata, with the condition developing for 17 days, and the inner side of the right hand is red and swollen.
Answer
Early-stage tinea incarnata can be treated with hot compresses, physical therapy, and consideration can be given to using sulfonamide drugs or antibiotics. If an abscess has formed, incision and drainage surgery can be performed at the tinea location. If the infection has spread to the subcutaneous tissue at the base of the fingernail, then a nail root epithelium lifting surgery is required, involving the removal of the nail root and placement of a drain. If purulent accumulation occurs under the nail bed, the nail should be removed, but care must be taken to avoid damaging the nail bed to prevent abnormal growth of the new nail.
