Question
My son was originally on Wyeth formula, but now, after turning one and switching to the third stage formula, his stools have become loose, and he has been experiencing diarrhea for the past two days. I’ve heard that the first and second stage formulas are more nutritious. Can I continue to feed him the second stage formula?
Answer
Is it just loose stools or are there bubbles? Have you observed any undigested milk lumps from the formula? All these need to be considered! Before, my baby had diarrhea with watery stools, occurring ten or more times a day, and by the second day, he had already developed mild dehydration! So, you must give your baby plenty of water and also administer anti-diarrheal medication! You also need to replenish his salt intake, not just our household salt; you can buy it at the pharmacy! Also, is your baby lactose intolerant? If so, he will have diarrhea after consuming formula, and you will need to switch to lactose-free formula! Don’t overfeed your baby; make sure he eats small meals frequently. Think about it; your baby’s digestive system is so delicate. If you keep feeding him without giving his stomach a rest, it will keep moving and result in continuous diarrhea! No more oil; cook some white rice porridge with some salt to cleanse his stomach! I’m not sure about your baby’s dietary habits, so I’m not sure what precautions to take. If it’s really not working out, you’ll need to see a doctor and have a stool test!
