Question

I am 10 years old and have been suffering from epilepsy for 3 years. I have not taken any medication yet. I have an attack about every 7 months, and it takes about 2 hours to recover after each attack. What medications are effective for epilepsy? Can I take eslicarbazepine or levetiracetam tablets?

Answer

Epilepsy, commonly referred to as “sacred wind,” is a sudden and transient brain dysfunction disease with a relatively high incidence, occurring at any age, but particularly common in adolescents. Epilepsy is a chronic disease, and if not controlled properly, it may last for years or even decades. Therefore, many epilepsy patients hold a pessimistic attitude towards cure. It must be pointed out here that the prognosis of most epilepsy is good, although there are also a few cases that are difficult to control and have an unfavorable prognosis. Epilepsy patients should maintain an optimistic attitude, build confidence in overcoming the disease, and adhere to long-term treatment. Generally, treatment should continue for at least 2 years after the condition improves before considering discontinuation. Common medications include carbamazepine, sodium valproate, and Epileptone tablets, among others.
