Question
Does your child have a possibility of strabismus? What are the common symptoms of strabismus?
Answer
The symptoms of strabismus can be broadly categorized into the following types:
- Eyeball upward deviation.
- Nystagmus, such as congenital esotropia.
- Strabismic torticollis.
- Diplopia. For example, in cases of paralytic strabismus and acute accommodative esotropia.
- Strabismus can lead to amblyopia, but those who can alternate gaze are less likely to develop it.
- A preference for closing one eye in sunlight to avoid diplopia.
- Ptosis, such as in patients with vertical strabismus who may have true or false ptosis.
- Misalignment of the eyes, which may sometimes go unnoticed by parents and discovered by others. Conversely, some parents may mistakenly identify pseudo-esotropia as true esotropia.
