Question

My newborn is 22 days old and has normal meconium. However, they don’t like to defecate anymore, and probiotics haven’t worked. An elderly midwife suggested giving the baby two medications, pediatric throat granules and azithromycin granules. I’m not sure if these two drugs are safe to take?

Answer

Based on your description, the newborn cannot be given medication arbitrarily; it is not advisable to take pediatric throat granules and azithromycin. If the baby doesn’t like to defecate, it could be due to poor digestion. If they are breastfeeding normally without abdominal pain, it might be a case of bloating. I suggest proper feeding and giving the baby an abdominal massage to promote gastrointestinal motility and aid absorption. Warm your hands, perform a clockwise massage around the navel area, 20-30 times per set, twice or thrice a day. You can also give probiotics for a period of time to regulate the gut.
