Question
How to Detect Infant Hip Dislocation Early?
Answer
The incidence of congenital hip dislocation in infants has been on the rise in recent years. How should parents detect it early? Firstly, you can observe the hip contours. Normally, both sides of the hips should be symmetrical and have an equal number of lines. If there is asymmetry or a difference in quantity, you should take the baby to the hospital for a hip joint examination. Secondly, you can perform the “frog test,” where the baby lies on their back with knees bent. Observe if the thighs touch the bed surface; if both knees touch, it is normal; otherwise, there may be a problem. Additionally, you can perform the “knee bending test,” where the baby lies flat on their back with knees bent at 90 degrees. Observe if both knees are at the same height; if one is higher than the other, pay attention to the hip joint condition. Early detection of hip dislocation is very important, as treatment is more effective when started earlier. Treatment within the first two months is the simplest and can fully restore normalcy; children from 3 months to 1 year old can achieve ideal results through reduction and immobilization; children aged 1 to 3, due to longer dislocation time, may require surgery. Therefore, parents should pay more attention to their child’s physical condition, timely detect hip dislocation, and receive standardized treatment to avoid lifelong disabilities.
