Congenital heart disease is caused by regional anatomical structural abnormalities due to malformation of the heart and great vessels, or by heart diseases where channels that should close automatically after birth fail to do so. While some minor ventricular septal defects may have a chance to heal spontaneously before the age of 5, most cases require surgical treatment.
