Question

How should congenital cirrhosis be treated?

Answer

Cirrhosis is a diffuse liver damage that results from the long-term or repeated action of one or more causes. In Taiwan, most cases are post-hepatic cirrhosis, with a smaller number being alcoholic cirrhosis and schistosomiasis-related cirrhosis. The pathological tissue has widespread necrosis of liver cells, nodular regeneration of residual liver cells, increased connective tissue, and the formation of fibrous septa, leading to the destruction of the liver lobular structure and the formation of pseudolobules, causing the liver to deform and harden as it progresses to cirrhosis. There are no specific drugs available at present, and herbal medicine can be used to soothe the liver, strengthen the spleen, dissolve phlegm, disperse nodules, and promote fluid circulation. Patients with conditions may consider liver transplantation.
