Question

Newborns often have sparse hair at birth, and parents may worry if it’s normal and how to handle it.

Answer

The amount of hair on newborns varies from individual to individual. Premature babies may have thinner hair, but typically, they start to grow more hair around one year of age, and by two years, their hair becomes quite thick. Parents should not avoid washing their child’s hair out of concern for hair loss, as this does not affect hair growth. As the child grows, their hair will gradually increase in volume. Generally, by the age of five or six, they will have as much and as dark hair as other children, and very rarely experience hair loss thereafter.
