Question

My newborn is 22 days old and has normal meconium. Later, they showed a lack of interest in defecating, and probiotics have not been effective. A midwife suggested two medications: pediatric throat granules and azithromycin granules. I am not sure if these can be taken.

Answer

Based on your description, newborns should not take medications random without caution. It is not advisable to give your baby pediatric throat granules and azithromycin granules. The baby’s lack of interest in defecation could be due to poor digestion. If breastfeeding is normal and there is no abdominal pain, it might be constipation. It is recommended to feed appropriately and give the baby an abdominal massage to promote gastrointestinal motility and aid absorption. Gently warm your hands and massage the navel area in a clockwise direction, 20-30 times per set, twice or thrice a day. You can also administer probiotics for a period of time to adjust the balance.
