Question
My child just turned two months old, and someone said that if there is a calcium deficiency, should I give them calcium tablets or an oral liquid?
Answer
Generally, if there is insufficient sunlight exposure or if the baby is formula-fed, it is recommended to start calcium supplementation from one month old, and continue until around 2 or 3 years of age. Three months ago, it was common for children to supplement with cod liver oil. The mother should also supplement with calcium. It is recommended that the child take Icodol and the mother take calcium tablets. After three months, the child can also be supplemented with calcium and cod liver oil appropriately. However, do not overdo it. For infants aged 1-6 months, in addition to food, they should receive 200 milligrams of calcium and 400 IU of vitamin D daily. For infants aged 7-12 months, in addition to food, they should receive 300 milligrams of calcium and 400 IU of vitamin D daily.
