Question

A 9-month-old baby is accustomed to falling asleep while breastfeeding, and cries and fusses if not allowed to. How should this be handled?

Answer

Generally speaking, it’s normal for a 3-month-old baby to enjoy sleeping while feeding. If the baby is breastfed, the mother can increase milk supply by eating more. When breastfeeding, don’t let the baby fall asleep with the nipple in their mouth to avoid forming a bad habit. Once the baby falls asleep, stop breastfeeding. If formula feeding is used, feed the baby every 3 to 5 hours.
