Question
My baby is 4 and a half months old. Starting two days ago, the baby has had symptoms of coughing, hiccups, and a runny nose, but has not developed a high fever and is in good spirits. Lung heat cough syrup and cooling granules have been prescribed by the hospital and have been taken for three days, but the symptoms have not improved. Should I consider other treatment methods? Thank you.
Answer
Upper respiratory infections do not necessarily cause a dramatic change in body temperature. Given the anti-inflammatory effects of the pediatric lung heat cough syrup and cooling granules, it may be necessary to consider adding a cold medicine. If parents have an allergic constitution, it is suggested to consider whether the baby’s hiccups and runny nose are related to allergies. If confirmed to be related to allergies, consider adding Benfen (cetirizine) for anti-allergic treatment. Doctor’s Inquiry: Do parents have a history of hay fever, and does the child have eczema, urticaria, or other allergic symptoms?
