Question

Is a newborn jaundice level of 15-11 severe, do I need blue light therapy, and are there risks involved? The doctor prescribed Yiganqianhu Oral Liquid, but 1/3 of the bottle is for the child to take or for the mother? Now, the child has diarrhea after taking it.

Answer

Medically, jaundice in newborns under one month old (within 28 days after birth) is referred to as neonatal jaundice. The normal maximum umbilical cord bilirubin level in a healthy newborn is about 51.3μmol/L (3mg/dl), and it should be less than 171~205μmol/L (10~12mg/dl) four days after birth, and less than 256.5μmol/L (15mg/dl) for premature infants. Physiological jaundice refers to a temporary jaundice caused solely by the characteristics of bilirubin metabolism and decomposition, which usually appears again 2~3 days after birth, peaks between 4~6 days, and fades between 7~10 days. Premature infants may experience it for a longer duration.
