Question
What are the symptoms of an infant with epilepsy?
Answer
In medical diagnosis, the symptoms of epilepsy in infants can be quite varied. Some babies may suddenly stop moving during activities, stare blankly, and exhibit an abnormal mental state with a lack of expression. These episodes can last from several minutes to several hours. Additionally, some infants’ epilepsy primarily manifests through oral-pharyngeal movements or gastrointestinal symptoms, such as unconscious chewing, drooling, nausea, and vomiting. Sometimes, they may also experience abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and loss of consciousness followed by a state of sleep. During the attack period (attack), the main symptoms may involve automatisms, which are purposeless actions or inappropriate words or behaviors spoken when consciousness is impaired, such as running, hitting, talking incoherently, smiling or laughing.
