Question
What tests should children with epilepsy undergo?
Answer
To confirm whether a child has epilepsy, an EEG must be conducted to aid in the diagnosis. If epilepsy is confirmed, further CT scans may be necessary to determine if the condition is caused by brain abnormalities. If the EEG shows normal results, a CT scan is not required, as epilepsy is caused by abnormal discharge of brain neurons, which CT scans cannot detect. EEGs can accurately detect epilepsy waves and do not pose radiation concerns. It is recommended that parents take their child to a regular hospital for a consultation as soon as possible. Once diagnosed, treatment should begin immediately.
