Question
What are the causes of snoring in newborns and how should it be treated?
Answer
A one-month-old infant may snore during sleep due to nasal congestion or phlegm in the throat. This condition is usually temporary and can be relieved by keeping the baby warm and ensuring good ventilation during sleep. If the sound of the baby’s snoring changes with the position, it may be due to congenital laryngomalacia caused by incomplete development of the laryngeal bones. This condition typically does not require treatment and usually resolves itself between the ages of 1 to 2 years. During this period, it is recommended to supplement the baby with calcium and vitamin D, and expose them to sunlight more often to aid in development. If the snoring sound does not change with position and the baby shows obvious symptoms of phlegm in the throat, treatment may be necessary. Medications such as monkey date syrup can be administered to help expel phlegm. If there is a significant amount of phlegm, medical consultation is required.
