Question

A newborn has an unclosed patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), with symptoms including skin rash and vomiting. Inquire about the severity of this condition.

Answer

After birth, due to the increased blood flow in the pulmonary circulation, the pressure in the left atrium exceeds that in the right atrium, causing the foramen ovale to functionally close. Most people have their ductus arteriosus completely closed and become the arterial cord within a year after birth. If the ductus arteriosus remains unclosed, it is known as patent ductus arteriosus. For newborns born 16 days ago, it is recommended to have a cardiac ultrasound re-evaluation in 2-3 months to assess the condition.
