Question
The left kidney measures 5.23.53.1cm, with the renal parenchyma compressed and thinned, approximately 0.36cm thick. The renal pelvis is dilated, about 1.3cm wide, and the surrounding renal pyramids are obviously dilated, with the widest part about 1.2cm. The upper and middle segments of the left ureter are filled, about 0.6cm wide, with the distal end of the tube showing unclear diameter. In the right kidney area, a kidney-like hypoechoic mass is detected, measuring about 1.60.80.8cm, with unclear boundaries between the renal parenchyma and the collecting system. The left kidney is severely hydronephrotic with mild ureteral dilation, and the right kidney is absent or severely underdeveloped. The umbilical cord is wrapped around the neck once, with an amniotic fluid index of 15.2cm. What could be the cause of this?
Answer
Based on the ultrasound results, your baby may have urinary system anomalies, including severe hydronephrosis of the left kidney, mild dilation of the ureter, and underdevelopment or absence of the right kidney. These conditions may be due to abnormalities in the kidney development process during pregnancy. Since you are approaching your due date, it is recommended to deliver the baby as induced labor at this time would still allow the baby to have a life at birth. If you are pregnant at a smaller month, it is usually advised to undergo induced labor to abandon this baby.
