Question

What are the common causes of infant hiccups?

Answer

Infant hiccups may be due to food accumulation and stomach bloating, liver qi attacking the stomach, or weakness of the spleen and stomach. Food accumulation and stomach bloating can lead to hiccups after a meal or when the baby is extremely hungry, accompanied by mild pain in the middle of the ribs. Liver qi attacking the stomach can cause frequent and loud hiccups, accompanied by chest discomfort and slight pain in the sides of the ribs. Infants with weakness of the spleen and stomach may experience intermittent hiccups with a weak voice and may also vomit clear water. For these conditions, it is recommended to use traditional Chinese medicine such as Zhishi Daoyi Wan, Chaihu Shugan San, or Renshen Pianxin Wan for treatment.
