Question

What are the treatment methods for patent ductus arteriosus?

Answer

Once the diagnosis of patent ductus arteriosus is confirmed, patients without contraindications can undergo surgery. After the operation, patients can return to the ward and resume normal eating and drinking without any restrictions. Some patients may be hesitant to eat or drink due to concerns about postoperative bowel movements and urination, but this is a mistake as hunger and dehydration can lead to more severe consequences. Therefore, we encourage patients to drink plenty of water and eat normally after surgery. It is important to note that due to the lack of movement in bed after surgery and prolonged fasting before the operation, patients may experience bloating and stomach pain. Therefore, patients should not overeat after surgery, avoid eating foods that are difficult to digest, and refrain from consuming dairy products or cold foods; it is best to consume porridge or soup-like foods until they can get out of bed and resume normal eating. For children under general anesthesia, they should only eat and drink after they are fully awake.
