Tonsillitis is a nonspecific inflammation of the tonsils located in the throat, caused by viral or bacterial infections. Infections caused by viruses are often part of acute viral upper respiratory infections, while those caused by bacteria are referred to as purulent tonsillitis. In severe cases, the tonsils become red and swollen with purulent discharge, leading to purulent tonsillitis. If not treated effectively, it can develop into chronic tonsillitis.
