Question

What does DS stand for in screening?

Answer

Down syndrome (DS), also known as trisomy 21, or as Mongolism or Dwarfism, is abbreviated as DS. Down syndrome is the most common chromosomal disorder in humans and the first such disorder to be identified. It occurs when there is an extra 21st chromosome in the cells due to the formation of gametes (reproductive cells) or zygotes (about 24 hours after fertilization). Regardless of nationality, race, or gender, the facial features of patients with Down syndrome are very similar, characterized by a special stupefied facial appearance; intellectual developmental disabilities and delayed growth and development are the most prominent and severe manifestations of Down syndrome.
