Question
Can individuals with Down syndrome reproduce?
Answer
Individuals with Down syndrome exhibit intellectual disability from birth, yet they retain the ability to reproduce. However, because of the chromosomal abnormalities present from birth, they have a higher risk of passing these abnormalities on to their offspring. Additionally, due to intellectual issues, their ability to live independently may be compromised. Doctors recommend that if a woman is diagnosed with Down syndrome during pregnancy, difficult decisions may need to be made for the sake of the family.
