Question

Last night at 12 AM, my child’s fever reached 39.5 degrees Celsius. After taking fever-reducing medication, the fever subsided. However, at 4 AM, the fever returned, and this time I gave him antiviral medicine and amoxicillin. The next day, we went to the hospital for a detailed check-up and found that the tonsils were swollen to grade 2. The urine test results showed bacterial and viral infections, and the doctor said it was not caused by a cold. The doctor prescribed medication, but at 2 AM on the 2nd, the fever reached 39 degrees again. On the 3rd, he received intravenous drip treatment, and by 5 PM, his body temperature was still 38.5 degrees. Now, I just gave my child fever-reducing medicine at home, and he said he felt sore all over his body. This continuous use of fever-reducing medication is not a solution. Do you have any other suggestions?

Answer

Based on your description, the tonsil swelling may be accompanied by fever for several days. I suggest you continue to monitor the temperature changes. If the temperature is below 38.5 degrees Celsius, you can adopt physical cooling methods, such as using a damp cloth to wipe the forehead, neck, and behind the ears. If the temperature is above 38.5 degrees Celsius, you can give your child ibuprofen to reduce the fever. I hope these suggestions are helpful to you, and wish your child a speedy recovery!
