Question

My child was born with seven to eight bowel movements a day, but now, after half a month, they have one bowel movement a day, and it’s very loose and in large quantities. Sometimes, the diaper leaks. Is this normal? The baby is fed only breast milk.

Answer

Typically, one to two bowel movements a day or every one to two days is normal. Many babies have more frequent bowel movements, even up to ten or more times a day, with each movement not necessarily containing much volume, containing only a small amount of water, and generally without any peculiar odor. As long as there are no other symptoms, good appetite, no vomiting, and growth and development are not affected, this is considered normal. Provide cod liver oil drops promptly, expose the baby to sunlight more often, feed frequently, and clean up after each bowel movement and urination.
